The Challenge
Santa Catalina's yearbook staff wanted a yearbook with a sophisticated and mature style. The theme "Growing at Santa Catalina" sought to tell a linear story of personal growth using the metaphor or a seed growing into a tree. The cover design needed to introduce the theme at first glance.
The Solution
In order to acheive a more traditional and mature aesthetic, I decided to use the traditional medium of watercolor to illustrate a full grown tree. I combined the painting with type and a textured paper background which would serve as design elements later in the book.
